He has a naturally good loyal heart but it is due to that heart that he had ended up on death row.
He is calculating and collected though the torment of carrying (what he believed to be the truth) to the grave has turned his hair white in parts and resulted in the scar-like dark markings under his eyes. In order to not crack under the pressure of guarding the "truth" and facing his inevitable fate, he's become callous and bitter.
He's a master of analytical psychology so he can read people easily but can also easily guard his own true self. At least from normal people.
